Vinyl siding is a very popular option for remodeling since it can be easily retrofit around windows, doors, corners and more. It is also cost effective compared to other siding systems. Not all vinyl is the same. Some vinyl you find is very thin and will oil can, fade and oxidize more and faster than higher quality vinyl. There are also foam backed sidings that are very ridged and have long color stay warranties and protect against hail and wind damage. There are also hard board sidings that are made of composite materials and concrete. These are much more popular in new construction. They require a clean, flat and dry surface for application. They are heavier and require more labor hours per sq/ft than other siding types. Hard board and concrete sidings are insect and mold resistant, have long material warranties and stand up very well to hail and wind. They do require more maintenance and many need to be painted every 8-10 years.
