 HOW MUCH DOES SIDING COST?
It’s easy to look up how much siding costs at a big box store or go online and search for “siding” in your favorite web browser. But, it’s hard to actually find out how much it costs to have your house re-sided. Siding isn’t complicated to put on. It doesn’t require extensive demolition. And it can be relatively inexpensive compared to other remodeling projects. Here are some of the factors involved in a siding project. - Do your research. There are many shapes, sizes, colors and materials you can use in your project. Vinyl siding is a very popular option for remodeling since it can be easily retrofit around windows, doors, corners and more. It is also cost effective compared to other siding systems. Not all vinyl is the same. Some vinyl you find is very thin and will oil can, fade and oxidize more and faster than higher quality vinyl. There are also foam backed sidings that are very ridged and have long color stay warranties and protect against hail and wind damage. There are also hard board sidings that are made of composite materials and concrete. These are much more popular in new construction. They require a clean, flat and dry surface for application. They are heavier and require more labor hours per sq/ft than other siding types. Hard board and concrete sidings are insect and mold resistant, have long material warranties and stand up very well to hail and wind. They do require more maintenance and many need to be painted every 8-10 years. The first question you should ask yourself before deciding what type of siding system to have installed is “How much maintenance am I willing to do or pay for?” When wrapping your entire house with vinyl siding, vinyl soffit and custom metal window and fascia wraps, there is very little maintenance involved. That is more of your "set it and forget it" system. The hard board siding systems may require painting and caulking. The second question you should ask yourself is “How much do I have to spend?” That is a determining factor when deciding what system, as well. Siding can range from low end vinyl to hard board siding with manufacturer pre-applied paint. There is no wrong answer to this question. Most likely anything new is better than what you are looking to replace. The last question is “How much time and how much demolition am I willing to deal with?” In many cases, vinyl siding can be applied to other siding systems. Hard board siding requires original siding to be removed before installing new siding. Vinyl can be applied in as little as a few days on an average size home. Hard boards can take up to a few weeks. Now that you have a little more information into all the decisions you have to make before you even get to price, you can see it why it is very difficult to find siding installation prices on the web. I can tell you that for an average house in our area vinyl is the most popular siding choice for our customers. The hard boards are more prevalent on new construction and are pushed by builders and covenants. Here is what we find in general for an average house in our area - Vinyl - $12,000-18,000 Hard Board Siding - $13,000-$20,000 Of course, there are too many specs homeowners have to choose from before you can find exactly what your project is going to cost. The size, shape and number of openings all have an effect, as well. Find a reputable installer in your area, that has knowledge about all siding systems to help you find the right solution.
